Ellen Hampton, chapter member and author, will speak on “Medicine and War: doctors in times of conflict”. Her most recent book, Doctors at War: the Clandestine Battle against the Nazi Occupation of France, was published in spring 2023 in the United States.

Ellen will give a quick overview of medicine in times of conflict. Smallpox was the greater enemy for American forces in the Revolution, and General Washington insisted that all his soldiers be vaccinated against it. He was aided in that effort by Jean-François Coste, chief physician for the French troops who arrived in Newport with General Rochambeau. Over 150 years later, doctors in occupied Paris battled against Vichy government policies while providing clandestine help to the Resistance.

We look forward to seeing you!

Warm regards,
Catherine
