80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings

D-DAY

To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings, the ABMC (American Battle Monuments Commission) invites us to the ceremony scheduled for Thursday, June 6, 2024, 11:30 a.m. at the Colleville-sur-Mer American Cemetery.

Address : Route du Cimetière Américain, 14710 Colleville-sur-Mer.

The Colleville-sur-Mer American Cemetery is a military cemetery located just above Omaha Beach, one of the main sites of the Allied landings on June 6, 1944. It contains the graves of 9,387 people, most of whom fell in action on D-Day. During commemorations on June 6, two American and French flags are planted at the foot of each grave. A bronze statue facing west stands at the heart of the Memorial. It symbolizes “the spirit of American youth rising from the waves”.

TILLOLOY

Nathaniel Guernsey, great-grandson of Sarah Guernsey, President General of NSDAR (1917-1920), will visit Tilloloy on Friday morning, April 26. His great-grandmother was instrumental in the aid provided by the NSDAR after the destruction of the First World War.

10:30 am: Commemoration of the NSDAR’s commitment, followed by a visit to Château de Tilloloy (to be confirmed). Cocktail lunch hosted by the town hall.

The village of Tilloloy was devastated after the First World War. Reconstruction was made possible with the help of the Daughters of the American Revolution, who financed the construction of a water supply system. The mayor of Tilloloy, Count d’Hinnisdäl, declared at the inauguration on August 23, 1921: “We, the survivors of a war that turned the world upside down, will forever praise and exalt the Daughters of the American Revolution, their gracious images forever reflected in the pure water offered to us”.

This is an opportunity for us to renew the Rochambeau Chapter’s ties with Tilloloy, and to salute the exceptional help provided by NSDAR.
